Custom metafield

The Custom Metafield feature is available as an add-on in the Premium and Enterprise plans of the ShipX app. This feature allows you to create advanced shipping conditions based on custom product attributes such as size, color, texture, material, and other unique product-specific values.

Using Custom Metafields, you can configure shipping scenarios that dynamically match products based on the metafield values assigned within your Shopify store.

How Custom Metafields Work

Custom Metafields help extend Shopify product data beyond the default product information. Once configured, these metafields can be synced into the ShipX app and used within shipping rate conditions.

Steps to Configure Custom Metafields

Step 1: Create a Custom Metafield in Shopify

To begin, you must first create the required metafield within your Shopify admin.

Navigate to Shopify Admin → Settings → Metafields and Metaobjects → Products/Variants → Add definition

While creating the metafield:

  • Enter a Name
  • Define a Type
  • Select the appropriate Category assignments
  • Save the metafield definition

Once created, the metafield will automatically become available within the respective product pages in Shopify.

Step 2: Add Values to Products

After creating the metafield definition:

  1. Navigate to Shopify Admin → Products
  1. Open the required product
  1. Scroll down to the Metafields section
  1. Enter the required value for the custom metafield

Example:

Metafield  Name
Value
Product Texture
Cotton
Product Size
XL
Material Type
Wooden

Save the product once the values are added.

Step 3: Sync Custom Metafields in ShipX

After configuring the metafields in Shopify, you must sync the metafield data within the ShipX app.

To sync:

  1. Open the ShipX app.
  1. Navigate to Products Section
  1. Click on the Sync Custom Metafields option

Note: Syncing is mandatory. Newly created or updated metafield values will only reflect inside ShipX after the sync process is completed.

Step 4: Use Custom Metafields in Scenario Conditions

Once the synchronization is completed:

  1. Navigate to Rates → Scenario
  1. Open or create a shipping scenario
  1. Under scenario: Product → Conditions → Custom Metafield
  1. Enter the custom metafield value and select the metafield name

Example:

  • Product Texture = Cotton
  • Product Size = XL

Step 5: Configure Shipping Rates Using Product Metafields

After creating and saving the scenario condition, you can proceed with configuring the shipping rates.

To configure the shipping rate:

  1. Select the preferred Shipping Zone.
  1. Enter the Shipping Rate Name.
  1. Configure the required rate calculation criteria based on your business requirements.
  1. Under the Product Filter section, select: Product Metafields
  1. Enter or select the required custom metafield value.
  1. Scroll down and configure the shipping rate settings as needed.
  1. Save the shipping rate configuration.

If the configured Scenario Condition, Shipping Zone, and Product Metafield values all match successfully, the shipping rates will be calculated based on the configured setup and displayed on the Shopify checkout page.
